Doa Aly was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1976.  She attended the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, earning a BFA in painting in 2001. Her practice as an artist - spanning the mediums of writing, sculpture, video, and performance - combines her wide-ranging interests in anatomy, psychiatric disorders, gesture studies, canonic literature and current events. Her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Gypsum (2014) and Townhouse, Cairo (2013) and Darat Al Funun, Amman (2010), among others. Her recent work has also been featured in group exhibitions at the Center for Curatorial Studies and Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, US (2017); Beirut Art Center (2017); La Loge, Brussels
(2016); Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-Caf), Cairo (2016); Delfina Foundation, London (2015); Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw (2015); Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul (2015); Eva International Biennial, Limerick, Ireland (2014); Huis Marseille Museum of Photography, Amsterdam (2014) and 11th Istanbul Biennial (2010). Screenings of her films have been presented at EMPAC, Troy, US (2017);
Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2016); International College Art Association Conference, Washington, DC (2015); MMCA, Seoul (2015) and International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany (2013), among others. Most recently she presented her
performances at Art Jameel in Dubai (2019) and Sharjah Biennial 13 off-site project BAHAR, Abud Efendi Mansion, Istanbul (2017). Aly was shortlisted for the Abraaj Group Art Prize in 2017. She lives in Cairo, and is represented by Gypsum Gallery.
